Sutter Creek celebrated
the dedication of the city’s thirteenth mural depicting various aspects of life
in Sutter Creek – today and yesterday – that decorate the walls of the Sutter
Creek Auditorium. The new mural was painted by first and second grade students,
ages 6 to 8 years old, in Elizabeth Tone’s 2006 – 2007 class at Sutter Creek
Elementary School. Their
colorful mural titled Sutter
Creek Grammar
School: 1870 – 2007 shows the historic and modern
Sutter Creek schools and playgrounds filled with students playing.
The students included self-portraits of themselves at play in the modern
half of the mural. Mural project
coordinator Robert Richards helped the students design and paint the latest
mural. Sutter Creek Elementary School
principal Sean Snyder was presented with a check for the art program at the
school. Several of the other mural artists were present at Wednesday’s
festivities to discuss their contributions and offer their congratulations. The
Mural Project for Sutter Creek was begun in 2004 as part of the
Sesquicentennial Celebration. Various themes and artists were chosen to
complete 10 4-foot by 7-foot murals in 2004. Another 2 murals were completed in
2006. The murals illustrate themes including “Historic Churches and
Cemeteries,” “Hard Rock Mining,” Cattle Ranching and Logging,” “Wells Fargo
Stage,” “The Volunteer Fire Department,” and more. This thirteenth mural will
be the final piece to the gallery of murals that circle the interior of the
Sutter Creek Auditorium.
