Plans to add to the height of the sign at the Jackson Creek Plaza shopping center on Hwy 49 will be presented at tonight’s Jackson Planning Commission meeting. According to a Jackson City Planning staff report, the new company managing the shopping center where Long’s Drugs and CostLess are located has been working with the city to “freshen up” the shopping center. To date they have re-striped the driveways and plan to pave and restripe the parking areas, add to the landscaping and paint the buildings.

The proposed new sign, which will be placed in the same location as the existing sign, would be 6 feet taller than is allowed by Jackson’s sign ordinance. In a letter to the city requesting a variance for the taller sign, BRAD Management of Walnut Creek says the new sign would correct flaws in the current one by adding the name of the shopping center, would include three more prominent tenants, and the background would be painted a neutral color. Only the top of the sign and the lettering would be internally lit – a design more compatible with Jackson’s small town aesthetic, according to the applicant. Currently the entire Cost Less portion of the sign is illuminated. BRAD Management’s letter calls the shopping center refurbishments “badly needed” and says the center has been a disappointment to its current owner, and “a disturbing number of our tenants have moved or are considering moving to… Martell.” Planning Commissioners will take public comment on the new design tonight. The planning commission will also consider two requests from Jackson citizen Kathy duBois regarding Jackson’s future economic viability and on Jackson’s planning issues. The meeting starts at 6 pm at Jackson City Hall.
