If you’re looking for a large animal to adopt
the El Dorado County animal shelter may be able to help you out. Livestock currently looking for
homes include “Roaming Joe”, a special needs quarter horse mix that is 23 years
old and requires a special diet and regular veterinary care for his teeth. Two other horses are also available: “Woody”, a 10-year-old Arabian gelding, and “Dusty”, a 12-year-old mustang mix. “Goldie” is a 13-year-old Jenny donkey waiting for a home. All of these animals are in good health and
came to the shelter as strays. Owners
were either not found or relinquished the animals to shelter staff.
The adoption process of Donkeys and other large
livestock is different than for cats and dogs and smaller livestock (such as
goats). Adoptions for large livestock
are done through a sealed bid process.
Individuals interested in the animals must complete a Livestock Bid
Form, available at the shelter
at 511 Placerville Drive in Placerville during regular business hours, and then
put their information and bid amount in the envelop which is sealed and
submitted to shelter staff. The
bid process for these particular animals closes on Friday, June 29 at 4:00 p.m.
“The adoption does not automatically go to the highest bidder,” explained
Ruffner. “We also must insure that the
adoption is a good fit for everyone. We
check to make sure the new home has adequate fencing and shelter, etc.”
Each of
the large livestock currently available for adoption has a different minimum
bid amount. Because Roaming Joe is a special needs
horse, with ongoing medical needs, his minimum bid is $50. The minimum bids for the other two horses is
$500 each, and the minimum bid for the donkey is $125. Animal Control
also has several goats available for adoption currently. The adoption fee for a goat is $40 each. The bidding process is not required for goats
and other smaller livestock animals. Pictures of the animals and further
details about them are available online at Animal Control’s website -
www.co.el-dorado.ca.us/animalcontrol.
For more information about the adoption process or to request to set up
an appointment to see the animals, please call the shelter at (530) 621-7631.
