slide8Calaveras County CHP units were assisted in the pursuit of a hit and run driver Sunday evening by the responding Calfire, or CDF, firefighters arriving on scene to render medical aid to victims of the accident. According to the California Highway patrol report the accident was caused when 38 year old David Dick of West Point was traveling westbound on Highway 26 from West Point while driving under the influence of alcohol. Because of his intoxicated state, according to the report, Dick proceeded around a curve in the roadway too fast and began to fishtail. Dick’s vehicle traveled across the solid double yellow lines and into the eastbound lanes, directly into the path of 37 year old Ernie Davis, also of West Point. Davis attempted to brake but was unable to avoid Dick’s vehicle.

The two cars collided head on. After the collision Dick attempted to flee the scene of the crash but was spotted by the arriving Calfire crews. According to the CHP, Calfire crews pursued Dick and then returned him to the scene after finding him lying along side the roadway about 300 feet from the accident scene. Dick was arrested for felony drunk driving and then released to medical personnel for an air ambulance ride to Dr’s Memorial hospital in Modesto. A review of the history of Dick’s California ID card found on his persons revealed that Dick’s Driving Privileges had already been suspended for multiple prior convictions for drunk driving. The other driver, Davis, was transported to Sutter Amador Hospital with major injuries. His passenger, 21 year old Michelle Morris of Burson, was transported to Sutter Amador, as well, with only minor injuries.
